MDAFP Stance on Immigration Enforcement

MDAFP Statement on Recent Events in Minnesota

Our organization’s core belief is that everyone in any community deserves access to healthcare and education without fear of enforcement actions that threaten their safety. The presence of federal immigration authorities in healthcare facilities and schools creates barriers to essential services. The Maryland Academy of Family Physicians and its president, Amar Duggirala, DO, MPH, FAAFP, extends its deepest condolences to those affected by the pain that Minnesota is enduring.

"As family physicians, our first priority is the health and safety of our communities. The Maryland Academy of Family Physicians is heartbroken by the recent events in Minnesota, and we stand with our colleagues in the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians during this tumultuous time.

The ripple effects of these events are devastating to public health. When patients avoid emergency rooms and clinics out of fear, lives are put at risk. When children are afraid to enter a classroom, we are witnessing the birth of lifelong psychological trauma. We are further alarmed by reports of healthcare professionals being prevented from acting as Good Samaritans—a fundamental tenet of our calling.

We Believe:

  1. Health care is a human right, fundamental to a functional society.
  2. Access to healthcare and education must be protected. No person should fear apprehension while seeking medical help or attending school.
  3. The duty to treat is sacred. Physicians and healthcare workers must be protected and permitted to provide emergency care without interference."
