AAFP Issues Statement to President

The AAFP is taking a call to action to urge the President and Congress to reconsider Secretary Kennedy’s ability to serve.

Family Physicians Call on President to Reconsider Secretary Kennedy’s Ability to Serve

AAFP released a statement on Wednesday, September 10, for a call to action to the President to reconsider the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), Robert F. Kennedy Jr, ability and role to serve.

People trust their personal physicians to tell them the truth about health information, including vaccines, and that trust has remains consistently high even as misinformation spreads.

But, trust in national public health systems is declining with fewer and fewer people trusting government agencies like the CDC to provide reliable information on vaccines. The AAFP has seen an alarming decline in confidence among the American public:

  • According to the Pew Trust, confidence in HHS is now below 50% - an astonishing 8-point drop in 8 months and a 20-point drop over the past decade
  • Eight in 10 adults say they trust their doctor “a great deal” or “a fair amount,” only four in 10 say they trust HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., to provide reliable information about vaccines
  • A recent survey showed that public safety of vaccines for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) is at 83% and at 74% for flu

Secretary Kennedy does not have the trust of the American people and should not lead the agencies comprising the heart of the nation’s public health system. Kennedy has also shared untrue information about vaccines and treatment for preventable diseases, including using Vitamin A to prevent measles.

The majority of Americans believe vaccines are safe and want to make decisions that keep them and their loved ones safe. They deserve a Secretary of Health and Human Services with the same beliefs and commitment.

Family physicians can continue to make a difference everyday by having quality, evidence-based conversations with their patients. Join in on the conversation and tell your members of Congress why safeguarding vaccine access and science-backed decision-making is critical in this AAFP Speak Out: Defend Vaccine Science and Public Health.
