2026 Family Medicine Educator of the Year

Read more about the 2026 winner, Dr. Eugene Newmier, of MDAFP's Family Medicine Educator of the year award.

About Dr. Euegene Newmier

Eugene Newmier, DO, FAAFP, is a family physician in Cambridge, Maryland, and owner of Rose Hill Family Physicians, LLC. For nearly three decades, Dr. Newmier has been a pillar of family medicine education on Maryland's Eastern Shore, dedicating himself to training the next generation of physicians while serving his community.

Since beginning his practice in Cambridge in 1997, Dr. Newmier has mentored 4-7 medical students annually through the Eastern Shore AHEC program, working primarily with students from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Over the years, he has welcomed hundreds of students into his practice, rarely turning away a student in need.

Dr. Newmier's approach to medical education is described as holistic and practical. He teaches students not only clinical medicine but also practice management, coding, quality measures, employee relations, and the day-to-day realities of running a rural family medicine practice, crucial skills often absent from formal medical education. He encourages students to formulate their own treatment plans and welcomes their input into patient care, creating an environment where learners feel genuinely engaged in clinical decision-making and patient outcomes.

His impact is best illustrated by his current practice partner, Dr. Adebowale Prest, who was Dr. Newmier's very first medical student in 1997. Many former students continue to seek his mentorship long after their rotations end, and several have cited him as a key influence in their decision to pursue primary care.

Dr. Newmier earned his Doctor of Osteopathy from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1994 and completed his Family Medicine Residency at Fairview Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, where he served as Chief Resident from 1996-1997. He was named AOA Clinical Volunteer Faculty of the Year by the University of Maryland Medical School in 2015 and became a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 2012.

Beyond his practice, Dr. Newmier has been deeply involved in organized medicine and community service. He serves on the Board of Directors for Shore Regional Health and has held numerous leadership positions within the Maryland Academy of Family Physicians, including serving as President from 2010-2012 and as a Delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with family, golf, and fishing.

On February 28, 2026, the Maryland Academy of Family Physicians named Dr. Newmier the Family Medicine Educator of the Year at the Annual Meeting and Winter Refresher, recognizing his outstanding contributions to family medicine education in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education.

The Maryland Academy of Family Physicians once again congratulates Dr. Eugene Newmier on this well-earned honor.
