Ahead of DKA: A Statewide T1D Screening Collaborative

MDAFP is launching a Performance Improvement Project designed to help member practices identify Type 1 Diabetes patients before they present in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

The one-day, in-person training on August 29 qualifies for ABFM PIP credit and is open to you and your practice team.

Who should attend: Each practice is encouraged to bring their full care team, including physicians, nurses, and medical assistants.

What the training day covers:

  • ADA screening guidelines and evidence review
  • How to interpret autoantibody results
  • DKA warning signs education
  • Workflow design for your practice
  • Hands-on practice with screening tools

What you take home:

  • Screening checklists and order sets
  • Patient education handouts in English and Spanish
  • EHR templates
  • Data tracking spreadsheets

After training day, your practice will move into implementation with structured check-ins at 30, 60, and 90 days.

  • 30 days: Share early wins and troubleshoot problems
  • 60 days: Present cases and discuss positive results
  • 90 days: Review outcomes and plan for sustainability
