The University of Maryland's Department of Family Medicine is one of the oldest in the country. The Residency has produced more than 325 graduates, many of whom are practicing in Maryland. Our graduates include many distinguished educators and practicing physicians. Many of the past presidents and other leaders of the MAFP are graduates of our program. While the residency is based in the inner city of Baltimore, graduates of the program are practicing in every possible practice location - urban, suburban, rural - as well as coast to coast.
The program prides itself on graduating family physicians that feel comfortable including obstetrics as part of their practice. In addition, a great number of our graduates serve as preceptors to the students of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Our department has been highly successful at recruiting residents from under-represented minorities, a number of which have stayed on as faculty members. The Residency has a rich history and it continues to be a strong force at the University of Maryland, as well as a great source of family physicians for our state.
