New  Resource on Health Care Law

Family physicians are one of the “trusted providers” patients look to for information on health law and how it affects them. The AAFP has teamed up with a coalition representing consumers, patients, physicians, nurses, hospitals and pharmacists to create HealthCareandYou.org—an online resource to help physicians and patients better understand what’s in the Affordable Care Act.

The interactive web site includes facts about the health reform law and is the only spot to find state-by-state listings of health care coverage options. The site also includes a timeline of when parts of the law go into effect and will be updated to reflect any changes made by Congress. In the future, a chat feature will allow users to ask specific questions about the law.

Questions? Contact Susan Hildebrandt, AAFP Washington DC Office.

Core Content Review of Family Medicine: Seeking Content Participants

The Core Content Review of Family Medicine, a national home-study CME Program and ABFM Board Review Course, is seeking individuals to author questions and discussions for one of the most successful Home Study CME Programs in the country. Core Content is developed in collaboration by the Connecticut and Ohio Academies of Family Physicians.

  • Question format mirrors the ABFM Board exam and discussions are approximately 300 words. Up-to-date reference material must be provided.

  • Authors must have good computer skills. Editors will provide feedback.

  • Many Residency programs have their residents in conjunction with a faculty member write questions and this is often used to fulfill their scholarly activities. Faculty may also claim CME credit for this activity.

  • Authors who provide material acceptable for publication will be included on the Author Page of the edition in which their material appears.

  • Core Content Review is a peer-reviewed publication and authors may include authorship on their CVs.

  • Compensation will be provided on a per question basis.

CORE is also looking for physicians to submit photographs or interesting cases that you may see in your practice. If you have taken a photograph where the patient could be clearly identified, you must obtain a release for publication signed by the patient or the patient’s parent or guardian. A release form may be obtained from the Executive Office. If the patient cannot be identified in the photograph, no release is needed. Photographs should be submitted in .jpg. .tif, or .png format.

Environmental Scan and News You Can Use

You’ve likely heard some news about the transition to electronic health records, or EHRs. But you may be uncertain about where to start, whether you can afford to make the change, or what incentives are available to assist you. Please call 1-877-95-CRISP (27477) or visit www.crisphealth.org to Register!

  • Maryland One of Seven States Awarded Early Innovator Grants by HSS: The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced the award of seven cooperative agreements to help a group of “Early Innovator” states design and implement the information technology infrastructure needed to operate health insurance exchanges. “Early Innovator states will play a critical role in developing a consumer-friendly marketplace where insurers must compete to deliver the best deal,” said HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. “These grants ensure that consumers in every state will be able to easily navigate their way through health insurance options.”

Starting in 2014, exchanges will help individuals and small employers shop for, select and enroll in affordable private health plans. All Early Innovator states will develop technology that is reusable and transferable, ensuring that other states will have flexibility in developing an exchange that best meets the needs of their unique health insurance markets without having to start from scratch.

  • Family Practice Management Surveying Member Satisfaction with EHR Systems: Family Practice Management (FPM) is currently conducting a member survey of satisfaction with electronic health systems (HER) systems. The survey results, which will be published in a later issue of FPM, will be a useful tool for Academy members when considering implementing EHR systems. The survey only takes about five minutes to complete. It is available to AAFP members through March 31. Members may complete the survey online or download a PDF version and fax it back to (913) 906-6010. As incentives, FPM is offering an iPad and 10 one-year subscriptions to FPM in print to members randomly chosen from those who submit usable responses. Questions? Contact Robert L. Edsall.

  • 2011 Assembly Poster Applications due March 31: Members are encouraged to present a poster at the 2011 AAFP Scientific Assembly in Orlando, FL on September 14-17. The deadline for submission is March 31. Apply online. Questions? Contact Candice Reynolds at ext. 6539.
