PI-CME Program for Major Depression and
Treatment Resistant Depression
The Johns
Hopkins University School of Medicine and The Depression and
Bipolar Support Alliance have developed a Performance
Improvement (PI-CME) initiative in the area of Major Depression
and Treatment Resistant Depression targeting a PCP audience. The
Educational Alliance for Consensus on Treatment-Resistant
Depression (TRD) seeks to improve the management of patients
with depression based on professional guidelines and evidence
from clinical trials and raise awareness of collaboration among
healthcare professionals to better enhance patient care and
outcomes. This activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for
up to 20 Prescribed credit(s) by the American Academy of Family
Physicians. AAFP accreditation begins April 15, 2009. Term of
approval is for two years from this date.
This Performance Improvement program will allow participants to
assess their performance via baseline assessment logs and
practice surveys, enable them to develop and implement an
improvement plan based on areas identified for change, and
complete a post-activity assessment to impact practice based
changes. The program is free of charge. Please go to
www.trdcme.com to register and participate.

Request for Nominations for Members for
the Medicare Evidence Development & Coverage Advisory Committee
Summary: This notice announces the request for nominations for
consideration for membership on the Medicare Evidence
Development & Coverage Advisory Committee (MEDCAC). Among other
things, the MEDCAC advises the Secretary of the Department of
Health and Human Services (the Secretary) and the Administrator
of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, as requested by
the Secretary, whether medical items and services are
“reasonable and necessary'' and therefore eligible for coverage
under Title XVIII of the Social Security Act.
We are requesting nominations for both voting and nonvoting
members to serve on the MEDCAC. Nominees are selected based upon
their individual qualifications and not as representatives of
professional associations or societies. We have a special
interest in ensuring that the interests of both women and men,
members of all racial and ethnic groups, and physically
challenged individuals are adequately represented on the MEDCAC.
Therefore, we encourage nominations of qualified candidates who
can represent these interests.
The MEDCAC reviews and evaluates medical literature, reviews
technology assessments, and examines data and information on the
effectiveness and appropriateness of medical items and services
that are covered or eligible for coverage under Medicare.

Survey Part of Action Agenda
to Reduce the Burden of Asthma in Maryland
The Maryland Asthma Control Program as part of it’s Asthma
Action Agenda goals, is conducting a needs assessment to
determine Professional Development and Education needs of health
care providers in Maryland around the NIH Asthma Management
Guidelines. This survey is intended for healthcare providers who
provide care to asthma patients and is structured to determine
their knowledge of and adherence to the guidelines based on the
6 priority messages in the Guidelines Implementation Panel
Report.
-
use of
inhaled corticosteroids
-
initial assessment of asthma severity
-
written asthma action plans
-
follow-up visits
-
assessment of asthma control
-
control of environmental exposures
The survey results will be used in conjunction with a
standardized pre/post test tool to develop appropriate workshops
for clinicians and to assure content consistency of the
workshops. The availability of Family Physicians with more
expert knowledge of asthma management is vital to achieving our
goal of reduced asthma burden in Maryland.

Survey Seeks to Improve
Health Care for Maryland Foster Youth
The Maryland chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (MDAAP)
is currently conducting a needs assessment of the health care
needs of foster youth in Maryland. MDAAP is currently working
with the Maryland Department of Human Resources on this
initiative which we’re beginning with a needs assessment, asking
key stakeholders for input about the health care needs of foster
youth. As part of this process, it is vital that we get input
from as many professionals as possible who care for foster
youth. As a professional who may care for foster youth, we would
appreciate your input about the health care needs of foster
youth, based on your own experiences in working with this
population. The information that you provide will be used to
develop a state-wide system for health care for foster youth.
Your input will help assure that health care needs of Maryland
foster youth are addressed.
This survey should take only about 5-10 minutes to complete. All
surveys are anonymous. The information that you provide will NOT
be recorded in a manner that will enable us to identify you
either directly or indirectly through identifiers. If you have
not cared for foster youth recently, we ask that you please
provide this information by completing survey question #1.
