Pain Management Conference, May 5, Baltimore - Special Rate for MAFP Members!

Strategies in Pain Management: A New Course for Primary Care Physicians will take place May 5, 2010 at the Hilton Baltimore, 401 West Pratt Street, Baltimore, MD 21201

Changing patient demographics, acuity and the availability of newer pain treatment agents make staying on top of its care intricate and at times difficult. Clinicians in primary care see patients who are in pain every day. Primary care residents rate their pain care training as inadequate. Less than half of medical schools include chronic pain in their curriculum. Whether it is through limited training or experience, there is reported to be a lack of preparation, confidence and reward when managing these patients.

Through participation in this course, learners will receive the strategies to adequately

evaluate the quality of the pain care in their practice setting, create a plan for change and leave with the tools necessary to positively impact the care they provide. Get practical, evidence based strategies for treating your patients with acute and chronic pain. Space is limited—register today! (847) 375-4715 or www.ampainsoc.org Members of MAFP receive a discount when registering by phone.

"Straight for Equality in Healthcare" Provides Inclusion Strategies for LGBT Patients

While affordable healthcare continues to be a major national issue, this is only one of the challenges facing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people when it comes to their medical care. Too often, providers' lack the basic cultural competency on LGBT issues, rely on misinformation or simply do not have access to simple and effective resources, creating barriers to adequate healthcare access for their LGBT patients. The release of “Straight for Equality in Healthcare” aims to change this trend. "For many healthcare providers, it isn't a case of not wanting to be inclusive of GLBT patients, but rather a sense that it isn't an issue - or, when it is, confusion around how to talk about it - that gets in the way," said Jody M. Huckaby, Executive Director of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) National, the organization that authored the new publication.

Straight for Equality in Healthcare (www.straightforequality.org/healthcare) is the second publication from PFLAG National's Straight for Equality (www.straightforequality.org) project. The project, launched in 2007, aims to help people have the everyday, nonpolitical conversations that need to occur in order to foster greater acceptance of GLBT people. Since its inception, the project has trained more than 3,500 people nationwide on the topic of how to be a straight ally.

PFLAG is the nation's foremost family-based organization committed to the civil rights of gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender people. To learn more, please visit www.pflag.org.
