MAFP CME Requirement

Two-For-One EB CME Credit

Effective January 1, 2005, CME activities receiving the AAFP evidence based continuing medical education (EB CME) designation will receive double credit for the portion designated for EB CME. The AAFP's Commission on CME believes that 2-for-1 credit for physicians will elevate the use and recognition of the value of this type of enhanced CME.

An example would be a CME activity that is submitted for 14 Prescribed credits, 10 of which are designated as EB CME. The EB CME portion would double in credit, making the grand total of 24 Prescribed credits available for physicians to claim (4+10+10=24 credits).

As a provider of CME, MAFP seeks EB CME for all or part of all of its CME offerings. EB CME credits result when faculty members cooperate by correctly completing the necessary forms. Because of the additional time necessary for faculty to complete forms and for AAFP to review the forms, MAFP is generally unaware of the number of EB CME credits approved for any given program prior to the printing of conference materials. MAFP conference attendees will be informed on site at every conference of the number of total credits they are able to claim (Prescribed, EB CME, AMA Category I).

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about EB CME for CME faculty, providers and physician learners are available at www.aafp.org/online/en/home/cme/cmea/ebcme/ebcme-faqs.html

AAFP/MAFP CME Requirements for Active/Supporting Members

  • At least 75 must be AAFP Prescribed credit; of which at least 6 of those being obtained from MAFP sponsored programs every 3 years (eg. CME conferences, journal CME, satellite CME, etc.).

  • .At least 25 are from group learning activities

  • Not more than 25 are from enrichment activities

  • Not more than 30 are from presentation or publication of an original scientific or socioeconomic paper pertaining to medical care.

  • Not more than 45 are from publication in a state or national

  • "refereed" journal

  • Not more than 15 are from preparation and presentation

The AAFP will send Maryland Chapter members, at regular intervals, correspondence showing each member's reported number of hours and reminding members of what is required. All details about the AAFP/MAFP's CME records, reporting and information can be obtained thru the AAFP web site at www.aafp.org/cme, toll free at 800-274-2237 (ask for the CME Records Department) or the MAFP at 410-747-1980 or info@mdafp.org.

Modifications to MAFP CME Policy

The MAFP Board of Directors has established two modifications to the chapter CME mandate policy:

  1. MAFP CME credits will be waived, until the subsequent AAFP reelection cycle, for those Active and Supporting members who relocate to the Maryland Chapter within 6-months of the end of their AAFP reelection cycle.

  2. Active and Supporting members who have not met the chapter requirement to report at least 6 chapter credits within their AAFP reelection cycle may receive a one-time waiver for that cycle by following the process noted below:

    1. Member must contact the MAFP office submitting a request (written, email, phone call) for a waiver for the chapter requirement indicating a desire to continue membership and pledging to obtain the credits during the next AAFP reelection cycle, eg. 12 credits if none of the required 6 chapter credits have been reported during the waived cycle.

    2. If member has obtained and reported a portion of the 6 required chapter credits by the end of the waived cycle, member must report the number of deficient credits in the next cycle along with the 6 required chapter credits.

    3. MAFP will reinstate members who are dropped for non-compliance with the MAFP CME requirement with the idea that they will obtain and report the number of deficient credits in the next cycle along with the 6 required chapter credits (in accordance and consistent with AAFP's policy on reinstatement of dropped members for non-compliance with their CME requirement).

    4. If, failing to obtain and report the required chapter hours by the end of the subsequent AAFP reelection cycle, MAFP will not accept another waiver request from member.
