Tar Wars

Poster by Victoria Newton
2005 Maryland State Winner

Tar Wars was developed in 1988 by the Hall of Life at the Denver Museum of Natural History and by DOC. It is a national program administered by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Targeting 4th and 5th grade students, Tar Wars focuses on the short-term, image-based consequences of tobacco use and how to think critically about tobacco advertising. A poster contest which emphasizes the positive aspects of not smoking is conducted at the school, state, and national levels.

The Tar Wars message is presented by volunteer family physicians and medical students. Tar Wars Maryland is administered by the Maryland Academy of Family Physicians Foundation. The local coordinator is Charles P. Adamo, M.D.

If you are interested in organizing a Tar Wars program in your school or becoming a volunteer presenter, please contact the MAFP office.
